Southern 7, Alabama A&M 1

FORT WORTH, Texas - Jose DeLa Torre hit a three-RBI home run to help push Southern University over Alabama A&M, 7-1, during the 2013 SWAC Baseball Tournament on Thursday at LaGrave Field.

With a 2-1 lead, SU (21-21) scored five runs in the sixth inning. Following DeLa Torre's homer gave the Jaguars a 5-1 lead before Kevin Williams singled up the middle to score Jeremy Lopez and Marcus Tomlin.

Williams finished 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI.

Jesse Holiday (7-3) pitched a complete game scattering four hits and one earned run to go with eight strikeouts.

AAMU (8-40) totaled four hits wih Deon Hall recording his first home run of the season. His homer in the third put the Bulldogs out front, 1-0. Caleb Bowen was tagged with the loss in 5.1 innings on the bump. giving up six runs (five earned) with three strikeouts.


Texas Southern 6, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 5

FORT WORTH, Texas - After a fifth inning rally, Texas Southern University scored a run in the seventh to eliminate Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 6-5, from the 2013 SWAC Baseball Tournament on Thursday at LaGrave Field.

With score knotted up at five apiece, Sebastian Stargell hit a single to right center to score De'Mario Thibodeaux to post the final score and the win for TSU (22-31).

Stargell went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Jerry Ford II finished with two RBI and a run scored to help lead the Tigers at the plate.

In the fifth, the Tigers scored five runs to take a 5-3 advantage. Ford's two RBI single up the middle drove in Corbin Smith and Andrew Garza. Garza and Smith each recorded a RBI in the inning.

Marcos Lara (4-2) pitched a complete game throwing 129 pitches with six strikeouts. Lara gave up seven hits and four earned runs.

For UAPB (20-29), Isias Alcantar hit a two-RBI home run in the top of the fifth to even the score at five for the Golden Lions. Alcantar finished with one hit and a run scored. Cody De Mera recorded two hits in five at bats while finishing with two runs scored.

Relief pitcher Redmond Floyd (1-2) was charged with the loss in 4.2 innings on the bump. He finished with three strikeouts giving up one unearned run and two hits.


Prairie View A&M 6, Alabama A&M 4

FORT WORTH, Texas - In the last elimination game of the day, Prairie View A&M University rebounded to defeat Alabama A&M, 6-4, to stay alive in the 2013 SWAC Baseball Tournament on Thursday at LaGrave Field.

PVAMU (24-26) recovered from a 3-0 deficit scoring two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. The Panthers answered a AAMU (8-41) run in the seventh with a score in the eigth.

Stef Hernandez (4-4) picked up the win throwing four strikeouts in seven innings. He gave up six hits and four runs (one earned) before A.J. Helms pickrd up his third save of the season.

At the plate, Brett Valley went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.Brad Benes added two RBI with Trey Price going 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Benes drove in a pair of runs with a single to right field to even the score, 3-3. Valley doubled to left field in the next inning to give the Panthers a 5-3 advantage.

In the seventh, Patrick Dodson singled to first base to score Deon Hall to draw the Bulldogs near, 5-4. Dodson had one run scored and Brandyn Crutcher went 3-for-5 for AAMU with a run scored.

The Bulldogs opened the game with a 2-0 lead after the first scoring on a throwing error and Julio Nunez plated Dodson on a sacrifice fly.

Sanchez Tucker (4-3) recorded the loss in six innings on the mound. He threw one strikeout, giving up seven hots and five runs (four earned).


Jackson State 11, Alcorn State 2

FORT WORTH, Texas – Jackson State University jumped out to an early lead to clip Alcorn State, 11-2, and advance to the semifinals of the 2013 SWAC Baseball Tournament on Thursday at LaGrave Field.

JSU (32-20) scored a pair of runs in the first two innings before adding another two in the fourth, one in the seventh and four in the ninth.

Brandon Gregory (6-4) pitched a complete game, giving up two runs on four hits, to collect the win. He struck out seven batters giving up two earned runs on four hits.

The Tigers early runs were sparked by Bryce Taylor’s two-run homer. At the plate, Curtis Stephen went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Fred Hampton and Nick Marigny each recorded a hit while finishing with three runs scored.

Alcorn State scored a run in the first and its final run in the ninth.

Angel Polo and Christian Hickman posted the RBI on one hit. Cedric Walker went 2-for-2 for the game.

Harrison Gary (5-3) took the loss giving up nine earned runs while striking out six.


Alabama State 10, Southern 9

FORT WORTH, Texas. - Alabama State University advanced to its first SWAC baseball tournament semifinal round after claiming a, 10-9, win over Southern on Friday at LaGrave Field.

In a game that began Thursday, 10 p.m. (CT), and ended 1:15 a.m.

ASU (32-23) erased a six-run deficit with four runs in the eighth inning and three in the ninth.

With one out in the ninth and trailing 9-7, Dillon Cooper doubled to left field and Dexter Price walked for the Hornets. Emmanuel Marrero doubled down the left field line to score Cooper while moving Price to third.

With the score 9-8, pinch hitter Raul Perez laid down a safety squeeze bunt to score Price and even the tally, 9-9. During the play, the ball was booted by Southern (21-22) and Marrero scored the winning run to close the game.

The Hornets scored first in a three-run third inning on a two-run single by Richard Gonzalez and a RBI single by Branden Castro. SU responded with five in the fifth inning to lead grab its first lead of the game. After the Hornets stranded the bases loaded in the sixth, the Jaguars scored three in the seventh and one in the eighth to take a 9-3 lead.

Behind 3-1, Stephen Wallace powered the fifth inning for the Jaguars hitting a grand slam over the left-center wall to go ahead 5-3.

Wallace went 2-for-5 with five RBI and a runs scored. Caleb Hatcher spearheaded SU's run in the seventh finishing with three RBI and two runs scored.

Gonzalez finished with three RBI on one hit. Castro went 3-for-5 with a RBI. Richard Amion, Dexter Price and Cooper each recorded two runs scored. Cooper went 2-for-4. Rojas and Perez each gathered two RBI.

Four pitchers saw action for ASU. Relief pitcher, Armando Ruiz (3-2), picked up the win after closing the top of the ninth. Starter, Joel Alvira, pitched 5.2 innings scattering seven strikeouts, four hits, and five earned runs.

The loss shadowed a strong pitching performance by SU starting pitcher Jose DeLeon. DeLeon threw 10 strikeouts in 7.1 innings on the bump and worked his way out of a pair of jams. In the third with two on, he struck out back-to-back batters to retire the side before striking out three straight in sixth with bases loaded.

Josh Powell (3-1) was charged with the loss giving up four runs (three earned) while striking out a pair.
