FORT WORTH, Texas - Alcorn State University opened the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament with an 11-8 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday at LaGrave Field.

ALCN (16-39) trailed 8-4 after six innings before scoring seven unanswered runs. The Braves added three scores in the seventh when Justing Barney led off the inning with a single and Angel Rosa reached on a passed ball. Angel Polo delivered a two RBI single with
Christian Hickman hitting a RBI single to left field to cut the lead, 8-7.

Polo finished with five RBI going 3-of-5 at the plate with two runs scored. Hickman tacked on two RBI on one hit with a run scored. Rosa had three runs scored with Barny hitting 4-of-5 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Josh Powell led off the eighth inning with a single, putting the tying run on. Ryan Akins singled to score Powell and even the game at 8-8.

Barney followed with a RBI single to score Ryan Akins from third to give the Braves their first lead of the game, 9-8. Polo reached on a fielder's choice which scored Ryant Piper from third on a play at the plate. ALCN scored again on a sacrifice fly by Hickman giving the Braves an 11-8 lead to escape with the win.

Ryan Fuentes (1-2) was charged with the win coming in relief for Mike Peters. In two innings, he gave uo two hits with two strikeouts. Peters, pitched six innings giving up seven earned runs while throwing seven strikeouts.

Dwayne Highsmith led UAPB (21-31) at the plate hitting 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Mike Wieland recorded three runs scored, one hit, and a RBI.

Andrew Buehler (0-2) came on for starter Mikey Ramirez and was hit with the loss. Ramirez finished with five strikeouts with six innings on the bump.

FORT WORTH, Texas - Alabama State University finished with 15 hits to cruise past Prairie View A&M, 16-0 in seven innings, during the first round of the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament on Tuesday at LaGrave Field.

Leo Rojas powered ASU (31-23) with a home run, five RBI, and four runs scored, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

In the sixth innings, the Hornets led 13-0 before Rojas slapped a three-run dinger to score Richard Amion and Marcus Swint for the final tally.

Amion, Waldyvan Estrada, and Emmanuel Marrero each registered two RBI. Amion finished with a pair of runs scored with Estrada hitting 3-for-3 with a one scored. Marrero went 2-for-4 while scoring two runs. Swint recorded three runs scored with two hits.

SWAC Pitcher of the Year, T.J. Renda (9-1), was tapped with the win, throwing the complete game. He three two strikeouts while giving up four hits.

Jonathan Mata (4-4) picked up the loss for PVAMU (23-26) giving up six earned runs in two innings.

Andre Oliver, Brad Benes, Dominiq Harris, and Jeff Sealy finished with a hit apiece to lead the Panthers.

FORT WORTH, Texas - Jackson State University held off a late rally from Texas Southern to pick up a 5-3 win and advance to the next round of 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament on Tuesday at LaGrave Field.

After trailing 1-0, JSU (30-21) scored two runs in the third and three in the fifth.

Ethan Bright led the Tigers at the plate with a pair of RBI on two hits. Aneko Knowles went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Stephen Curtis and Gary Thomas each picked up a RBI.

Alexander Juday (5-3) tallied the win on the mound throwing four strikeouts in eight innings. He scattered four hits giving up one unearned run.

Larry Romero earned his second save of the season for the Tigers.

In the third inning, Nick Marigny doubled to right field before Thomas reached on a throwing error that would score Marigny from second base. After Knowles flied out, Curtis singled to right center to score Thomas and put JSU ahead, 2-1.

With two outs on the board in the fifth, the Tigers scored their last runs of the game. After Knowles singled and Curtis walked putting runners on first and second, both would steal and advance.

Bryce Taylor was hit by a pitch to fill the bases and bring up Bright. Bright singled to right field to score Curtis and Knowles. Taylor would steal home following the throw to give JSU a 5-1 lead.

In the ninth, TSU (20-28) De'Mario Thibodeaux walked and reached second after a balk before standing on the third courtesy of a wild pitch.Tyler Flanangan walked and stole second. Marquis Curry was hit by a pitch to load the bases and bring up pinch hitter Sepbastian Stargell.

Stargell singled to left field to drive in Thibodeaux and advance Curry and Flanagan. However, pinch hitter Javier Valdez hit into a double play but scored Flanagan to close the game and diffuse the Tigers comeback effort.

Felix Gomez (1-7) was charged with the loss in seven innings on the bump. He threw six strikeouts giving up four earned runs.
