Leader Board Tightens in SWAC Golf Championship

ALEXANDRIA -- Jackson State closed the gap on first place Alabama State in the second round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Golf tournament.

After leading by 22 strokes after the first round, the Hornets saw their lead shrink to only eight after JSU shot a team score of 296 on Tuesday. Alabama State cooled off considerably after a sizzling 278 on Monday. The Hornets posted a 310 in the second round.

Branson Ferrier of Alabama State climbed to the top of the leaderboard with a two-day total of 145. He was the low scorer on Tuesday, finishing the day with a 76. Teammates Jose Rodriguez and Francis Berthiaume also shot rounds of 77 to help keep the Hornets in front.  Meanwhile, opening round sharpshooter Ian Mmbando who shot 68 on Monday, struggled with an 86 in round two.

Meanwhile, Kyle Bodenstein and Josh McCormick of JSU moved into second and third place behind Ferrier with rounds of 74 and 70 respectively.

When play resumes on Wednesday in the final round, it will be a two horse race. ASU carries a team score of 588 into the final round, while JSU has 596. The closest team to that twosome is Texas Southern who has a two-day total of 651.
