Low Rounds Has Hornets With Early Advantage

ALEXANDRIA, La. -- Defending men's golf champion Alabama State had four of five golfers fire sub-par rounds to opening rounds on Monday at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship at Oak Wing Golf Club.

Ian Mmbando led the way with a 4-under 68. His round included an eagle and seven birdies. Just one shot off the pace was teammate Branson Ferrier who shot a 3-under 69. Jose Rodriguez of ASU finished the round tied with Nqobani Noabambi of Arkansas-Pine Bluff for third on the leaderboard at 2-under 70, while another ASU golfer, Francis Berthiaume, is three strokes from the top at 1-under 71.

The red-hot start has the Hornets well ahead of the pack with a first round 278. Jackson State is second with a round of 300, while Texas Southern is third at 329.

The tournament continues on Tuesday morning at Oak Wing.
