SWAC Track and Field Championship Day 2 Recap 4/21/2013 12:49:00 AM SWAC.org NEW ORLEANS -- With one day of competition remaining, teams are heading down the home stretch towards the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Track and Field title at the championship meet at Tad Gormley Stadium. Going into the final day of competition, it's a two horse race for the women's team as Prairie View leads with 81.5 points, followed by four-time defending champion Alabama State who is closing in with 70.5. Mississippi Valley State is third with 47 points, while Southern is fourth with 44 and Grambling fifth with 22 points.It's still a tight race on the men's side as MVSU holds slim lead over Southern. The Jags actually led on Saturday, but MVSU overtook them as darkness fell, finishing the day with 59 points, while SU rounded out Saturday with 54. Prairie View isn't too far away, holding on to third with 44 points. Alabama State and Grambling State round out the top five with 34 and 33 points respectively.Individually, Myesha Dixon (above, right) of Prairie View captured the Heptathlon with a total of 4422 points. Meanwhile, Demetrius Peacock (above left) of Alabama A&M surged late past teammate Marion Malone, who led after Day 1, to take the Decathlon crown with 5450 points.Dixon also captured first place in the Javelin with a throw of 117-01 feet (35.68m).Two other ladies earned individual event titles. For the women, Kashmia Weary of Southern was the champion in the Shot Put with a distance of 44-02.75 feet (13.48m). Tambriya Barney of Mississippi Valley sailed into first place in the Long Jump with a jump of 18-10.75 (5.76m).D'Wayne Houston of Southern won his second individual title of the weekend, winning the Shot Put with a throw of 52-00.50 feet (15.86m). Meanwhile, Akil Bennett of Southern took home the Long Jump trophy with a flight of 23-06.25 (7.17m).The champiohships conclude on Sunday afternoon.
