GARLAND, Texas - Malcolm Miller and Derick Beltran scored 19 points apiece to help No. 1 seed Southern defeat No. 6 Alabama A&M, 72-59, on Friday to earn a spot in the 2013 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament championship game.
Miller had eight rebounds and was 6-of-9 from three-point range. Jameel Grace had 13 points and five assists to pace the Jaguars (22-9).
Southern shot 41 percent from the field for the game and led 29-20 at halftime. The Jaguars opened the second half with an 11-4 run and did not look back keeping a double-digit lead for the final score.
AAMU (11-20) shot 42 percent but had 17 turnovers. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Jaguars 37-33.
Jeremy Crutcher led the Bulldogs with 19 points and six assists. Demarquelle Tabb registered a double-double with 14 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. Green Hill followed with 17 points.
Southern will play No. 4 seed Prairie View A&M in the title match on Saturday. The game will be televised live on ESPN2. Tip-off is slated for 3:30 p.m. CT.
