GARLAND, Texas - Joanna Miller scored 29 points to lead No. 9 seed Grambling State University to an 80-56 win over No. 8 seed Alabama State on Tuesday at the Curtis Culwell Center.
With the first round win, GSU (9-22) advances in the 2013 Toyota SWAC Basketball Tournament and will face No. 1 seed Texas Southern.
Miller shot 11-20 from the floor and dished out five assists. Cierra Ceazer contributed 17 points and eight rebounds. Kamiya Burwell added 12 points and four assists.
The Lady Tigers hit 40 percent from the floor including 47 percent from behind the arc.
With 14:12 left in the game and the score tied at 45, GSU used a 16-5 run to pull away from ASU (9-21) in the second half.
Taila Arrington, Nakiya Smith and Ashley Jones paced the Lady Hornets. Arringotn finished with 13 points. Smith and Jones chipped in 11 points apiece. Jones hauled in eight rebounds.
ASU shot 39 percent from the floor.
