SWAC Indoor Track & Field Championship Recap

BIRMINGHAM - Opening day of the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships is in the books. Finals for the three field events (shot put, long jump, high jump) were completed along with the finals of the 3,000 Meter Run and Distance Medley Relay. Meanwhile, premliminaries set the field for the finals on Sunday in the remaining events.

After Day 1, Prairie View leads the way with 48 points. Texas Southern is second with 30 points, while Southern and Mississippi Valley are deadlocked at 28 points. Grambling is in fifth place with 26 points, followed by Alabama State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Jackson State and Alabama A&M.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM DAY 1

Daniel Kibet of Mississippi Valley State outdistanced a pair of runners from Prairie View to take first place in the men's 3,000 meter run. Kibet crossed the line with a time of 8:48.46. finishing two and three were Dinaoli Adam and Lucio Rosas of PVAM. Adam finished with a time of 8:51.13, just ahead of Rosas at 8:51.32.

D'Wayne Houston of Southern topped the field in the Shot Put, taking the title with a throw of 16.36m (53-08.25). Lee Thrasher of Alabama State was second with at 15.30m (50-02.50), while Reginald Redding of Southern came in third with a throw of 14.95m (49-00.75).

In the men's Long Jump, Aaron Rodgers was the high flyer with a title-winning jump of 7.12m (23-04.50). Teammate Drayton Rolle followed with a jump of 7.09m (23-03.25) and Rashad Wilson of Prairie View claimed third place with a leap of 7.03m (23-00.75).

In familiar fashion, Grambling State took care of business in the Distance Medley Relay, winning the event with a time of 10:26.76. The GSU DMR team was made up of Deonte Pope, Dequainte Brown, Stephone Leaks and Alfred Bartie. PVAM took second with a time of 10:31.75, while MVSU was third at 10:35.02.

Pierre Shepherd of Prairie View was the winner in the High Jump, clearing 6-07.50 (2.02m). Rodgers finished his second event of the day in the top three, finishing second with a jump of 6-06. Preston Woodard was the third place finisher with a height of 6-04.25.

Olympian Anaso Jobodwana of Jackson State blew up his own 200m SWAC record winning his preliminary heat with a time of 20.73. He set the previous record of 21.15 last season.
