JACKSON, Miss. - Alabama State University edged out Southern, 3-2, to open play at the 2012 Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament on Saturday at the T.B. Ellis Gymnasium.

ASU (22-14) posted set scores of 22-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-22 and 15-5.

Tiara Kelley and Myla Marshall led the Lady Hornets with double digit figures.
Kelley registered 16 kills while Marshall followed with 13.

Brooke Beasley contributed 31 assists and seven digs. Ellyn Jones trailed with 17 for the Lady Hornets.

Defensively, Luiza Griz led ASU with 13 digs while tacking on two assists. 

SU (9-18) was led by Phalen Clark’s double-double; she posted 11 kills and 22 assists while tacking on seven digs. Leila Lealaimatafao registered 10 kills while Marisol Macias followed with eight. Diamond Williams recorded 12 digs to lead the back line for the Lady Jaguars.
