@Alabama A&M 78, Grambling State 56
Normal, Ala. - Alabama A&M University snapped a nine-game skid defeating Grambling State, 78-56, in Southwestern Athletic Conference on Wednesday inside the T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
AAMU (2-9, 1-0) shot 54 percent from the floor, nailing 50 percent of its three-point baskets, while hitting 81 percent from the charity stripe. The Lady Bulldogs controlled the boards, 34-29, and were led Brittney Strickland's 14 points. Strickland connected 4-of-5 from the floor and 2-of-3 from long range.
Ebony Johnson scored 11 points and Clairissa Moore pulled in 10 rebounds. Shundray Davis dished out nine assists.
AAMU controlled the game from the tip holding a 9-3 lead at 16:31 in the first half. From that point, the Lady Bulldogs outscored GSU (1-11, 0-1), 24-18, to hold a 33-22 lead at the break.
After opening the second half on the other end of a 5-4 edge, AAMU held a 37-27 lead before jumping on a 16-9 run to extend the lead, 53-36. Down the stretch, the Lady Bulldogs claimed the win closing the game, outscoring the Lady Tigers, 24-20.
Three players powered GSU, scoring in double figures, to help the Lady Tigers shoot 37 percent.
Jessica Watkins scored 14 points from 5-of-9 shooting. Joanna Miller added 13 points and Kamiya Burwell added 12 points. Tyler Anderson led GSU with six rebounds.
@Southern 72, Texas Southern 60
Baton Rouge, La. - Southern University opened Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a 72-60 victory over Texas Southern on Wednesday at F.G. Clark Activity Center.
SU (2-10, 1-0) held a 39-23 lead at the break and held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. Kendra Coleman scored 15 points, Jasmine Jefferson added 12 points and Yasmin Fuller chipped in 10 points to carry the Lady Jaguars offense. Jefferson and Laneisha Stephens hauled a nine rebounds apiece.
SU shot 38 percent overall while winning the rebounding effort, 44-39.
Briana Sidney scored a game-high 18 points to help TSU (3-9, 0-1) shoot 33 percent. Teera Williams followed with 15 points while hauling in six rebounds. Janelle McQueen registered 10 points for the Lady Tigers.
@Alabama State 76, Jackson State 62
Montgomery, Ala. - Erica Henderson and Danielle Gazaway scored 18 points each to help lift Alabama State over Jackson State, 76-62, on Wednesday in Southwestern Athletic Conference play at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
Gazaway hauled in eight rebounds while shooting 6-of-13 from the field. Quentori Alford added 12 points and Kierra Paige dished out eight assists.
ASU (3-9, 1-0) shot 41 percent including 52 percent in the second half.
Tiffany Kellum recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to power JSU (3-7, 0-1). Kellum hit 7-of-10 overall. Rachel Jones added 15 points connecting 5-of-9 and Bridgette James contributed 11 points.
The Lady Tigers hit 37 percent collectively but shot 1-of-9 from three-point range.
The first half experienced four lead changes with the score evened on five occasions including a 29-29 tie at the half.
In the second half, the score was tied at 39 with 15:07 remaining. The Lady Hornets jumped on a 16-6 run to hold a 55-45 lead with 8:54 on the clock. In the closing minutes, ASU held of a JSU charge with a 21-17 advantage for the final score.
Prairie View A&M 64, @Alcorn State 52
Lorman, Miss. - Prairie View A&M University started its Southwestern Athletic Conference schedule off with a convincing 64-52 win over Alcorn State on Wednesday inside the Whitney HPER Complex.
The match-up featured SWAC preseason player of the year, PVAMU's Latia Williams, and preseason defensive player of the year, Alcorn State's Carolinisia Crumbly.
PVAMU (4-7, 1-0) extends its win streak over league opponents to seven games. The Lady Panthers shot 50 percent overall and captured the rebounding effort, 29-22.
JaQuandria Williams led the Lady Panthers with 14 points from 6-of-10 shooting. Latia Williams added 13 points and seven rebounds. Kiara Etienne followed with 12 points. PVAMU shot 50 percent from the field and scored 21 points from ALCN turnovers.
Facing a 31-27 halftime deficit, the Lady Panthers outscored Alcorn State 37-21 in the second half using an 11-0 run. Alcorn State countered with its own run and pulled to within one point at 42-41 when Renelle Richmond scored on a three-point play with 12:03 left to cap off a 10-4 run. Prairie View A&M dug in defensively and limited the Lady Braves to just four points over the next 10 minutes.
ALCN (0-10, 0-1) connected 38 percent of its shots with Crumbly scoring 13 points. Tierra Frost led the Lady Braves with 15 points from 5-of-10 shooting. Richmond finished with four rebounds.
Mississippi Valley State 71, @Arkansas-Pine Bluff 64
Pine Bluff, Ark. - Despite a season high in turnovers, Mississippi Valley State University picked up a 71-64 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Southwestern Athletic Conference play on Wednesday in H.O. Clemmons Arena.
MVSU (4-8, 1-0) shot 45 percent from the field and connected 6-of-14 (42 percent) from the arc. Lenise Stallings tallied 15 points and Davina Jefferson added 12 points, hitting 6-of-7 from the floor.
The game was locked at 26 during halftime before MVSU outscored UAPB 45-38 in the second half. UAPB (4-7, 0-1) cut the lead, 52-48, with just over five minutes left and made a run at the Devilettes but could not close the gap.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Lady Lions with Chigozianyi Okwumbua pacing the offense with 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Cassidy Wright added 12 points and seven boards while Lakendra Marsh and Asia Rhines-Malone each chipped in 10 points.
UAPB connected 31 percent of its shots including 4-of-22 from behind the arc.
