UAPB Men, Alabama State Women Lead After Day One

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Arkansas-Pine Bluff men and Alabama State women lead after day one action at the 2012 SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium.
After three events for the men, Arkansas-Pine Bluff posted 27 points on the day, with Grambling State in second with 21 points, and Southern in third with 15 points. Prairie View and Mississippi Valley State are tied for fourth place with 14 points each.
On the women's side, Alabama State holds a strong lead with 46 points after four events, followed by Texas Southern with 23 points, and Mississippi Valley State recording 14 points for the day. The Grambling State women sit in fourth place with 10 points.
Daniel Kibet of Mississippi Valley State lead the men's 10,000-meter with a winning time of 34:02.08. Following in second was Grambling State's Trevor Gayten with a time of 34:21.90, while Texas Southern's Brandon Broden (34:22.40) finished in third place.
Alfred Hasoni (Southern) took first place in the men's javelin throw with a a mark of 55.66m, while Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Erick Thomas (53.79m) and Jerren White (52.70m) accounted for the second and third place finishes, respectively.
Mississippi Valley State runner Joyce Chumo earned first place in the women's 10,000-meter with a time of 39:21.32. The Alabama State Hornets rounded out the the top three, with Courtney Gooch (40:46.92) in second and Raheema Hodges (42:21.45) in third.
Four of seven events in the heptathlon were completed today, including the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, and the 200m dash. The remaining three events of the heptathlon begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Five of the decathlon events took place on day one of the outdoor championship. The men completed the 100m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400m dash. The decathlon will resume on Saturday, with the remaining five events beginning at 8:00 a.m.
Texas Southern standout Sabrina Fudge cleared the bar at 3.06m in the women's pole vault, taking first place in the event. Alabama State rounded out the top three with Fola Richardson (2.96m) taking second place and Lyqruisha Wyche (2.66m) in third.
Alabama State claimed top billing in the men's and women's hammer throw events, with Lee Thrasher's mark of 47.93m (157-03), while Shexnieavia Bryant recorded a throw of 49.12m (161-02).
Day Two action begins with combined events at 8:00 a.m. Field event finals start at 12:00 p.m. with running preliminaries set for 3:00 p.m.
