BATON ROUGE, La. - Desmond Russell threw a complete game, 6-hit shutout in the final game of the opening round of the 2012 SWAC Baseball Tournament to lead Jackson State to a 7-0 victory over Texas Southern.

The top-seeded JSU Tigers scored six of their seven runs in their final three at bats to secure the victory and protect the gem being tossed by Russell.

Frank Solis and Charles Epperson each had a pair of hits for JSU. Jose Cruz drove in a pair of runs as well.

The story, however, was Russell. He struck out five and walked just one in keeping the TSU Tigers off balance all night.

Ray Hernandez and Jaron Brown each scratched two hits off the JSU ace, but it was not enough.

Abel Flores went 7.0 innings and took the loss.

Jackson State will play Prairie View in the winner's bracket on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.  Texas Southern will face Alabama State in a noon elimination game on Thursday.
