The Alabama State University women completed their weekend at the Tiger Track Classic, facing the toughest field they have seen during the young outdoor season.
"Overall we had a fair day and had some positive things happen," head coach Ritchie Beene said. "We still have a lot of things to improve on and we will address those things in practice."
ASU had some solid performances, including the women's 4x100 meter relay team, who led the way with a fourth place finish and a time of 46.24. Latrice Lee, Jasmine Pope, Asha Tavernier, and Tia Rolle made up the 4x100 relay team.
The women's 4x400 meter relay team, including runners Jerrica Mahone, Breana Kelly, Narricka Williams, and Lutrisha Altidor, finished in ninth place with a time of 3:48.10.
"Our relay teams did some really good things against some really tough teams," Beene said. "Our women's 4x100 team finishing fourth was a strong finish for them. We used two freshmen and for them to run that well against that type of competition was a big positive for them."
On the women's side, Tia Rolle had a ninth place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.85.
The Hornets will be back in Auburn for their next event when they participate in the War Eagle Classic on April 20-21.
The Jackson State women headed to Gainesville, Florida, where they participated in the Pepsi Relays hosted by the University of Florida.
Raina Sanders finished 37th, individually, in the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.34.
The Lady Tigers 4x100 meter relay team (Deonna Bailey, Raina Sanders, Briana Brown, and Munirat Balogun) finished in 36th place with a time of 47.25. The 4x200 meter relay team finished in 20th place with a time of 1:40.31, and the 4x400 meter relay team (Deonna Bailey, Raina Sanders, Evan Thomas, and Munriat Balogun) finished 43rd with a time of 3:50.70.
The Priarie View A&M women's track team brought home the gold in four events in the Texas State Invitational at the Texas State Track and Field Stadium.
Sophomore Terracia Moody won the 400-meter dash as she placed first with a season-best mark of 54.96. Junior Myesha Dixon was busy in both the track and field events as she won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 13.9, while also winning the seven-event heptathlon with 4,902 points.
In the event, Dixon showed her versatility and all-around talents as she placed first in the javelin, shot put and 100-meter hurdles. Aisha White capped off Prairie View's first-place performances in the triple jump as the junior won the event with a length of 39-5.75 (12.03 meters).
Kelci Alexander placed fifth in the 400 after running a season-low while the Bustamente sister duo of Martha and Leticia posted a solid weekend in the distance runs. Martha finished fourth (11:25) in the 3,000-meter run with an outdoor personal best followed by a fifth-place run from Leticia, who also finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a season-low time.
Prairie View's 4x100-meter relay team ran a season low time en route to a fourth-place finish while the mile relay team of Sylvonna Thompson, Moody, Sha'Reva Tyson and Alexander placed third.
Junior Kia Allen also had a solid day in the heptathlon as she placed second behind Dixon. Allen won the long jump after posting PV's best mark this season and finished second in the 200 as she totaled 4,592 points.
Brittany Earl threw PV's best mark this season in the hammer throw in addition to Rose Sampson in the discus. Corinna Brown also logged a season-best mark in the high jump.
The women's track team returns to action next weekend at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas.
