SWAC.org
For the first time in school history, Alabama State is hoisting a SWAC Championship trophy in men's golf. ASU held off Jackson State by 7 shots to win the 3-day event at Oak Wing GC in Alexandria, La.
After trailing the Tigers by a single shot after 18 holes, Alabama State took charge of the 2012 championship with a 289 team total on Tuesday and followed that with a solid team score of 300 during Wednesday's final round to keep the Tigers at arm's length all day.
Despite JSU posting the top two individuals in the tournament in Clay Myers (72-71-74--217) and Kyle Bordenstein (75-72-76--221), the Hornets had four steady scorers throughout the tournament and placed four golfers among the first-team all-conference finishers. Bordenstein was named Freshman of the Year as the low rookie medalist.
Jose Rodriguez and Scott Benson each tied for third place overall at 223, and John Montgomery and Robert Grant each tied for fifth place at 224 to lead the Hornets to the team title.
Texas Southern finished a distant third in the team standings.
