JSU Runs Away with SWAC Women's Golf Title

Jackson State ran away with the team title at the 2012 SWAC Women's Golf Championship at Links on the Bayou in Alexandria, La. winning the 36-hole event by 37 shots over second place Texas Southern. The Tigers placed four players in the top eight individuals and shot a winning total of 336-323 -- 659.
Cammryn Smith finished second overall to lead the Tigers with a two-day total of 158, and Stephanie Robertson followed in third place at 159. Robertson also earned Freshman Low Medalist honors for the championship. The final JSU player among the All-SWAC first team was Erica Payton, who tied for 5th at 162. Amanda White earned second team honors placing 8th at 180.
Texas Southern (361-335 -- 696) finished in second place as a team, and placed three players on the all-conference lists. Kassandra Rivera tied for 5th and earned first-team honors. Bridget Johnson (7th at 173) and Tyler Lawrence (10th at 182) earned second-team accolades.
Defending champion Alabama State placed two individuals among the all-conference honors, but did not place in the team competition as two individuals withdrew during the tournament for the Hornets. Mia Campbell placed 4th at 160, and Lyndsey McCall was 9th at 181.
Prairie View A&M's Shanequa Valentine posted a seven-shot victory over the field at 78-73 -- 151 to take medalist honors.
Jackson State's Eddie Payton was named SWAC Coach of the Year.
