SWAC Weekly Wrap: PV and GSU Sweep SWAC Sets

PV opened its conference schedule Monday with a sweep of rival Texas Southern in a rain-shortened series. GSU took all three in Baton Rouge past its rival, Southern. JSU remained hot in the East.
Prairie View (9-7, 2-0 SWAC West)
The Panthers have won four straight games and seven of their last nine, including a two-game SWAC series sweep over Texas Southern. PV is the only remaining unbeaten team in conference play in either division.
Grambling (10-6, 5-1 SWAC West)
The Tigers dropped a non-conference game to open the week at Centenary, but went to Baton Rouge over the weekend and left Southern with a three-game sweep, including a 13-inning thriller in the middle game of the series.
Southern (8-8, 3-3 SWAC West)
After starting the season 8-3, the Jaguars have dropped five straight games, including a three-game home series with Grambling. Southern is just 3-3 in games decided by three runs or less this season.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-15-1, 1-2 SWAC West)
UAPB was out of conference over the weekend with a home series against South Dakota State. The final game of the series ended in a tie due to darkness. The Golden Lions are winless in their last six games, including playing ranked opponents Oklahoma and Oklahoma State on the road.
Texas Southern (9-7, 0-5 SWAC West)
After beginning the season 8-1, the Tigers have dropped six of their last seven, including all five conference games against Southern and Prairie View. Three of those conference losses came in games decided by one or two runs.
Jackson State (9-6, 5-1 SWAC East)
The Tigers have won five straight and six of their last seven to move atop the Eastern Division. JSU swept Alabama State over the weekend by a margin of just six runs, including a 13-inning win in the middle game of the series.
Alcorn State (3-12, 2-1 SWAC East)
The Braves snapped an 11-game skid over the weekend taking the final two games of its SWAC opening series with Mississippi Valley State. Alcorn has played the likes of Auburn, LSU, Georgia, and Oral Roberts in its non-league schedule.
Alabama State (5-13, 3-3 SWAC East)
The Hornets snapped a four-game losing streak Tuesday win a non-conference win at Florida A&M. ASU dropped all three league games at Jackson State over the weekend by a combined six runs, including a 13-inning affair in the middle game of the series.
Mississippi Valley State (2-14, 2-4 SWAC East)
The Delta Devils took the opening game of the Alcorn State series on Saturday, but have dropped five of their last six games. Both of MVSU's wins are in one-run games, but the Devils are just 2-6 in games decided by three runs or fewer.
Alabama A&M (5-13, 0-3 SWAC East)
After a 5-5 start to the season, the Bulldogs have dropped eight straight games against some tough competition that includes Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. A&M was out of conference over the weekend, and have not scored more than three runs in any of the games during the losing streak.
