MVSU Reclaims Top Spot, A&M Creeps Closer

Mississippi Valley State (14-12, 11-4) 82, Texas Southern (4-21, 2-12) 48
ITTA BENA - In the constant tug-of-war at the top of the SWAC standings, Mississippi Valley State moved back in front with a win over Texas Southern on Monday. The Devilettes moved a game ahead of Southern who lost on Monday. MVSU dominated TSU, shooting 50% for the game. The Devilettes had a huge lead at halftime, 55-23, and cruised in the second half. De'Kisha Fondon led the way for MVSU with 17 points. Alia Frank added 11 points, while Khristina Clemons tallied 10. Kayla West was the only Lady Tiger in double-figures, finishing the game with 10 points.

Alabama A&M (14-10, 9-5) 61, Alcorn State (10-15, 8-7) 50
NORMAL - alabama A&M continued to creep up in the standings, moving into third place, just a half game behind Southern after a win over slumping Alcorn State. The surging Lady Bulldogs won their third straight and sixth in the last seven games, while Alcorn State, who was at the top of the SWAC at one time, lost for the second consecutive game and fifth in the last seven contests. Reigning SWAC Player of the Week Whiquitta Tobar paced A&M with 23 points, while Jasmine Sanders contributed 12 points and nine rebounds. Renelle Richmond led Alcorn, who shot only 30% from the field, with 11 points.

Alabama State (11-12, 8-6) 52, Southern (11-11, 10-5) 39
MONTGOMERY - Southern slipped into second place with a road loss to Alabama State. The Lady Hornets' second straight win moved them into a 3-way tie for fourth place. Three players scored in double figures for Alabama State. Danielle Gazaway led the way with 13 points and six rebounds, while Erica Henderson and Millicent Jones each dropped in 10. Jamie Floyd led Southern, who dropped back-to-back games after winning three straight. She finished the game with 13 points.

Prairie View (11-14, 8-6) 72, Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-25, 1-14) 52
PINE BLUFF - Latia Williams led four Prairie View players in double figures as the Lady Panthers rolled over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Williams had 19 points and eight rebounds, while Michalea Burton dropped in 16 points, Kiara Etienne had 13 and Jeannette Jackson 11. Chigozi Okwumabua led UAPB with 13 points, while Jenise Gentry tallied 11.
