Texas Southern 68, @Norfolk State 53
NORFOLK, Va. - Gianne Fleming had 18 points to lead Texas Southern University over Norfolk State, 68-53, on Monday night at Joseph Echols Hall.

The Lady Tigers picked up their first win of the season to improve to 1-2 while the Spartans fell to 1-2.

Texas Southern started the first half on a 6-0 run. The Spartans finally got on the board with a free throw shot by Rachel Gordon with 17:45 left in the first half. NSU rallied back to come within one after a 3-pointer by Kashay Barnes with 16:28 left.

Despite shooting just 22.6 percent (7-of-31) shooting in the first half the Spartans were able to stay within striking distance. Barnes scored nine of her 11 points in the first half and Rachel Gordon hit a jumper with 10 seconds left in the half to bring NSU within four at the half as NSU trailed Texas Southern, 25-21.

Fleming hit a 3-pointer early in the second half to spark a 10-4 run for Texas Southern as the Tigers led the Spartans, 35-25 with 16:44 left in regulation. The Spartans came within five with a layup by Marian Brooks with 6:27 left in the half, but were unable to overcome the Tigers.

The Spartans had two players in double-figures as Barnes led the way with 11 points, followed by Quineshia Leonard's 10 points. Gordon tallied 14 rebounds for NSU.

NSU outrebounded Texas Southern, 38-34.

@Alabama-Birmingham 71, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 25
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff dropped a 71-25 decision to Alabama-Birmingham on Monday inside Bartow Arena.

UAPB moves to 1-3 on the season and UAB improves to 4-1.

The Lions shot just 17 percent from the field, while the 25 points scored were the fewest allowed by a UAB team in school history.

Lakendra Marsh led the Lady Lions with eight points and Chigoziany Okwumabua hauled in a team best seven rebounds.

Amber Jones scored in double figures for the fifth-straight game to lead the UAB. Karisma Chapman chipped in 11 points for the Blazers.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff capitalized on a sluggish start from the Blazers, building an early 4-0 lead after a Christina Lasane jumper at the 17:37 mark.

That early advantage would soon disappear as UAB took its first lead when Jones scored off a fastbreak layup to assume the 5-4 advantage. From that point on, the Blazers never looked back on their way to the win.

Chapman and Jones led all scorers in the first half as Chapman scored nine along with Jones' seven to lead UAB to a 36-12 halftime advantage.

The 12 first-half points scored by the Lions marked the lowest offensive output the Blazers have faced in a half this season.
