No Undefeated Teams Left in SWAC Play After Monday

Both Southern and Alcorn State suffered their first losses in conference play of the season and only one home team, Alabama State, prevailed on Monday night.
Jackson State (5-8, 2-2) 49, Southern (4-7, 3-1) 42
Baton Rouge - Tiffany Kellum scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Kiana McCarty had 12 points and rebounds as Jackson State handed Southern their first sWAC loss of the season. The Lady Tigers overcame 21 turnovers, while holding Southern to only .262 (16-of-61) shooting. Jamie Floyd paced Southern with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Tigers led 24-16 at the break. The Lady Jaguars rallied to take the lead midway through the second half, but couldn't hold on. Southern led 37-36 with 5:47 left when JSU went on an 8-0 run to take a 44-37 lead with 1:52 left in the game.
Grambling State (6-8, 2-2) 55, Alcorn State (5-9, 3-1) 44
Alcorn - Alcorn State shot only 23 percent from the field in their first SWAC loss of the season. The Lady Braves hit only 14-of-59 fieldgoal attempts, including 1-of-13 from 3-point range. Grambling struggled as well, but had enough to pull out the victory. The Lady Tigers were 19-for-48 (.396) and 1-for-5 from beyond the arc. Savannah Carter and Markisha Patterson each had 11 points to lead Grambling. Carolinsia Crumbly paced Alcorn State with 14 points and nine rebounds. GSU led 22-15 at halftime, but Alcorn rallied to take a 33-31 lead with 13:00 minutes left. Eight minutes later, with Alcorn leading 37-36, Grambling scored eight unanswered to take a 44-37 lead with 1:52 left. The Lady Braves never recovered.
Mississippi Valley State (5-9, 2-1) 69, Alabama A&M (7-7, 2-2) 67
Normal - Mississippi Valley State overcame a double-digit deficit to beat Alabama A&M on the road. The Devilettes trailed by as much as 15 points in the first half, but closed to within eight at 36-28 by halftime. Trailing 40-35 with 16:09 left, MVSU went on a 15-2 run to blow past the Lady Bulldogs and take a 50-42 lead with 8:28 remaining. A 3-point play by Khristina Clemons gave the Devilettes their largest lead at 53-44 with 8:00 left. MVSU led 67-58 with 2:43 left when A&M rallied to tie the game at 67-all with 57 seconds left on a pair of freethrows by Whiquitta Tobar. But, with 24 seconds left, Ka'Neshia Smith hit a layup to give the Devilettes a 2-point lead. The Lady Bulldogs had a chance to tie, but Tobar's jumper with four seconds left was off the mark. Clemons led MVSU with 15 points and six rebounds. Alia Frank added 11 points, while De'Kisha Fondon and Lenise Stallings each scored 10 points. Jasmine Sanders led A&M with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds. Tobar added 17 points and six rebounds and Shundray Davis contributed 15 points and seven rebounds.
Alabama State (6-7, 3-1) 66, Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-14, 0-3) 58
Montgomery - Alabama State used a balanced attack to deny Arkansas-Pine Bluff their first win of the season, while notching their third straight. The Hornets cleared the bench early and often while building as much as a 14 point lead in the first half against the Lady Lions. Twelve of the 15 Lady Hornets scored with Jasmine Settles leading the way with 10 points. Quentori Alford had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Hornets. Lakendra Marsh led UAPB with a game-high 21 points and Chigozianyi Okwumabua had 18. Neither team shot the ball well as both finished the game shooting 32 percent from the field. ASU outrebounded UAPB 46-45 while both teams struggled taking care of the basketball. UAPB had 28 turnovers and ASU committed 20. There were a total of 69 free throws shot in the game with UAPB connecting on 26-of-34 (76.5) and the Lady Hornets hitting 21 of their 35 attempts.
