The Western Division seeds are set for the 2011 SWAC Baseball Tournament after completion of play over the weekend. There is work yet to be done, however, in the Eastern Division race.
Grambling's sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff over the weekend secured the No. 2 seed in the Western Division for the Tigers and eliminated the Golden Lions from qualifying for the tournament. Prairie View A&M earned the No. 3 seed, and Texas Southern earned the No. 4 seed from the West. Southern had previously wrapped up the No. 1 seed.
The top seed in the Eastern Division is all that has been secured so far. Alcorn State has already earned that place in the upcoming tournament. Jackson State and Alabama A&M have a remaining makeup series that was washed out by last week's tornado outbreak in the Huntsville area. Those games are scheduled now for Tuesday and Wednesday and will go a long way in determining the final seeds in the Eastern Division.
The Tigers and Bulldogs will play a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Hazel Green High School, and then play a single game Wednesday beginning at noon on the A&M campus.
Scenarios: Both JSU and AAMU control their own fate in gaining the No. 2 and No. 4 seeds, respectively, heading into the series.
IF JSU SWEEPS: JSU is the No. 2 seed, MVSU is the No. 3 seed, Alabama State is the No. 4 seed, and AAMU is eliminated.
IF AAMU SWEEPS or WINS 2 of 3: MVSU is the No. 2 seed, JSU is the No. 3 seed, AAMU is the No. 4 seed, and Alabama State is eliminated.
IF JSU WINS 2 of 3: AAMU is eliminated and Alabama State is the No. 4 seed. Alcorn and MVSU must then make up the single game that was rained out of their series earlier in the season to determine the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds between MVSU and JSU.
The MVSU / Alcorn game is currently scheduled for Monday, May 16 at 1:00 p.m. in Vicksburg. Valley would need a victory over Alcorn to secure the No. 2 seed if JSU takes 2 of 3 from AAMU.
