BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southwestern Athletic Conference kicks off the 2011 Winter Championships schedule on February 26-27 with the Men's and Women's Indoor Track Championship held at LSU's Carl Maddox Field House in Baton Rouge, La.
The Alabama State men's and women's indoor track and field programs look to defend their respective titles. The Lady Hornets are led by juniors Lutrisha Altidor and Kesia Derilus. Altidor sits atop the league records this season in the 800-meter dash (2:16.52) and Derilus ranks first in the 5000-meter run (19:08.19) and the mile run (5:16.28).
Vying for the women's title along with Alabama State are Jackson State (JSU) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the 2010 Championship second and third place finishers, respectively. JSU led by junior Raina Sanders, who owns the top conference times in the 200-meter dash (24.80), 400-meter dash (55.39) and the 500-meter dash (1:15.99). Distance runners Monica Carillo and Karla Atencio pace the Lady Lions. Carillo ranks first in the SWAC in the 3000-meter run (10:50.26) while Atencio is second in the league in the 5000-meter run (19:14.32).
The Hornet men look to win their second straight conference title and are paced by senior Delorean Peek. He ranks first in the SWAC in the 800-meter dash (1:51.05) and the distance medley (10:37.73).
Contenders for the men's title also include Grambling State (GSU), last year's runners-up, and 2010 bronze medalist Southern University. Grambling State is backed by a core distance runners. The Tigers rank first or second in the league in the 200-meter dash, 800-meter dash, mile run and the 3000-meter run. The Jaguars are led in field events by Jason House, who owns the top conference mark in the high jump. Micah McCollough, the 2010 Most Outstanding Field Performer, ranks first in the SWAC in the long jump.
The championships will be split between two days, with action starting at 9:00am on Saturday. Complete results and live stats will be available online through the SWAC website (www.swac.org).
