ALEXANDRIA, LA - The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff made a reservation for the finals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Soccer tournament with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Southern University on Friday afternoon at the Johnny Downs Center. The Lady Lions will face the winner of the other semifinal match between Mississippi Valley State and Prairie View A&M at noon on sunday.
After a tough, scoreless first half, UAPB finally broke through in the 48th minute (47:01). The lethal combination of Silvia Fuentes, Taryn Wright and Nicole Parks-Powell struck to put the Lady Lions on the board. Fuentes and Wright executed on a pair of touch passes to Parks-Powell, who fired a shot past Southern keeper Sarah Forde.
It would be all that the Lady Lions would need. Southern could not generate an offensive charge. Only one shot was fired by the Lady Jaguars and it was wide of the goal. Meanwhile, UAPB got off 18 shots, six were on-goal.
