MVSU Advances in Dramatic Shootout

ALEXANDRIA, LA - The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes filled the final opening in the SWAC Soccer tournament semifinals, edging Texas Southern in a penalty kick shootout. It was the third overtime game of the day. MVSU (6-8-2) will take on Prairie View A&M in the evening game on Friday night, while TSU (4-13-1) saw their season come to a heartbreaking end.
Texas Southern led for much of the game, but couldn't close the deal. Jessica Smith gave TSU the lead in the 25th minute. However, with less than eight minutes left, Jerrica Salido tied the game with a score in the 83rd minute.
After a pair of overtime periods, the teams had to go to penalty kicks. Each goalkeeper made one stop leaving the penalty kick total tied at 4-all. Hailey Beekman gave MVSU a one goal advantage in the shootout. Brendaletzy Lopez had a chance to tie but her shot sailed high and wide.
