West teams dominate Day 1 of Baseball Tournament

The SWAC's Western Division teams went unbeaten on Day 1 of the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.

 

Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Grambling State, Texas Southern and Southern all posted first-day wins against their East counterparts.

 

Thursday's Schedule

9 a.m.    Mississippi Valley State vs. Alcorn State (loser eliminated)

Noon      Jackson State vs. Alabama A&M (loser eliminated)

3 p.m.    Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff vs. Texas Southern

Wednesday's Recaps

Game 4 - Southern 8, Alabama A&M 3

 

Southern came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Alabama A&M 8-3 in the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.

 

The Jaguars (26-14) advance to play Grambling State at 6 p.m. Thursday.

 

The Bulldogs (14-30) scored a pair of runs in the top of the first on an RBI triple and Alton Ellison, who then scored on an error to give Alabama A&M a 2-0 lead. The Jaguars scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Victor Franklin.AAMU added a run in the third when Fabian Harper scored on an error.

 

Southern scored a run on an RBI single by Frazier Hall in the fourth inning and a solo home run by James Armstrong in the fifth, the first home run of the Tournament.

 

The Jaguars took the lead for good with a five-run seventh inning .Brad McDavid’s RBI single scoring Frazier Hall put Southern ahead 4-3. Greg Whitfield’s three-run homer to left field and an RBI fielder’s choice by Ozzie Lamos gave SU an 8-3 lead.

 

Daniel Garcia (4-0) got the win for Southern, going seven innings allowing six hits and three runs (one earned), walking none and striking out one.

 

Grant Mattix (3-4) took the loss for Alabama A&M, which will play Jackson State at noon in an elimination game.

 

 

 

Game 3 - Texas Southern 4, Mississippi Valley State 0

Defending champion Texas Southern continued its winning ways in Conference Tournament action, defeating Mississippi Valley State 4-0 in Game 3 of the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.

 

It was the first shutout in SWAC Tournament Play since 2007 when Prairie View A&M shutout Mississippi Valley State 10-0.

 

The Tigers (23-27) will play Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff Thursday at 3 p.m.

 

TSU plated two in the top of the first inning, with both RBIs coming on a pair of groundouts. Texas Southern added to its lead in the fifth innings on RBI singles by Earnest Rhone and Charles Derkowski.

 

David Arrendondo (5-5), the SWAC Player of the Year, threw a four-hit shutout, walking one and striking out seven. He pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third inning

 

Mississippi Valley State (20-28), the 2009 Eastern Division Champion, will play division rival Alcorn State at 9 a.m. Thursday in an elimination game.

Grambling State jumped out to a big lead and held on late to take a 9-7 win in Game 2 of the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.

 

Grambling State (15-35) advances to play the winner of Alabama A&M-Southern Thursday at 6 p.m.

 

Grambling State scored a pair of runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. GSU scored six times in the fourth inning. Aided by a JSU error, the key hit was two-run double by Steve Kletke down the leftfield line to give Grambling State an 8-0 lead.

 

Jackson State (35-20) got on the board in the sixth inning. LaDerek Camper's two-run single highlighted the rally and cut the deficit to 8-3.

 

J-State added four runs in the seventh. Jamaal Thelwell's two-run double down the left field line was the big hit in the inning as Jackson State cut the deficit to 8-7 but they could get no closer.

 

Grambling State added a key insurance run in the eighth as a two-out error allowed Roby to score for the final margin. Roby went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Klekte 3 RBI to lead Grambling.

 

Thelwell, Camper and Frank Solis had two RBI each for Jackson State. JSU will play the Alabama A&M-Southern loser Thursday at noon.



Game 1 - UAPB 6, Alcorn State 5

 

 

Barry McDonaley's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over Alcorn State in Game 1 of the 2009 SWAC Baseball Tournament.

 

Donley's two-out game-winning hit scored Lloyd Burchett, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

 

The Golden Lions (21-23) rallied from a 5-0 deficit after 3 ½ innings to advance to Thursday's 3 p.m. game where they will face Texas Southern.

 

Alcorn State (25-18) jumped out to its early lead with single runs in the first and second innings and a three-run fourth. The Braves were also aided by seven UAPB errors.

 

The Braves scored a single run in each of the first two innings. Adrian Bowens' RBI single scored Josh Brumfield. In the second, Brumfield laced an RBI single to center scoring David Reed, who reached on a two-out error.

 

Alcorn State added three runs in the fourth on just two hits, taking advantage of four UAPB errors, to extend to a 5-0 lead. The Golden Lions escaped further damage in the inning, getting the final out with the bases loaded.

 

UAPB got its first run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Hinton Huckabee, scoring Matthew Pace who doubled.

 

The Golden Lions cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a bases-clearing double by Pace. UAPB tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Pace, who went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI.

 

Justin Moring (9-2), the 2009 SWAC Pitcher of the Year, went the distance for UAPB, allowing eight hits and five runs (three earned) with two walks and five strikeouts.

 

Collins Arnold (4-6) of Alcorn State took the loss in relief. Brumfield went 3-for-4 for the Braves with 2 RBI. Alcorn State will play the Mississippi Valley State at 9 a.m. Thursday.
