Early Life & College career
  • Alphonso Gene Ford was born on October 31, 1971, in Greenwood, Mississippi.
  • He attended Amanda Elzy High School in Greenwood, where he was an All-State basketball player.
  • Ford then played college basketball at Mississippi Valley State University from 1989 to 1993.
  • He had a remarkable scoring career at MVSU:
    • As a freshman he averaged ~29.9 points per game and led all NCAA Division I freshmen.
    • His sophomore year he averaged ~32.7 ppg.
    • 65 career points, which ranks among the top all-time NCAA Division I scoring totals.
  • He became the first player in NCAA Division I history to average 25+ points per game in all four of his seasons.
  • He was a four-time selection to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) All-Conference Team.
Professional Career
  • Ford was selected in the 2nd round (32nd overall) of the 1993 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.
  • His NBA career was brief: he appeared in a handful of games for the 76ers (and earlier for the Seattle Supersonics).
  • He found great success in Europe:
    • In leagues such as Spain, Greece, Italy he was a prolific scorer.
    • He won the Euro League’s Top Scorer title twice (2001, 2002).
    • In his honor, the Euro League’s scoring-leader trophy was named the Alphonso Ford Euro League Top Scorer Trophy.
