  • Horace Lawson Buckley (born 1941) was a distinguished educator, coach, and public servant whose contributions to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) left a lasting legacy.
  • A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Buckley earned his bachelor’s degree from Mississippi Valley State University, where he excelled in track and field, and later pursued advanced studies at Tuskegee Institute, Jackson State University, and Mississippi State University.
  • Following his athletic career, he devoted himself to education as a teacher, counselor, and assistant principal, while also volunteering as a track coach.
  • Buckley was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding achievements in track and field and his lasting impact on the conference’s athletic programs.
  • Beyond athletics, he served 16 years in the Mississippi House of Representatives, demonstrating the same leadership and dedication in public service that marked his athletic career.
