Barnes was a distinguished figure at Southern University, where he not only excelled as a student-athlete but also left a legacy as an administrator. He graduated in 1948 and was recognized as an All-American football player for three nonconsecutive years, highlighting his athletic prowess during his collegiate career. Following his playing days, Barnes dedicated decades to higher education, ultimately serving as Vice President and then as the longest-serving Chancellor of Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) from 1970 to 1987. In honor of his contributions, the Leonard C. Barnes Administration Building at SUSLA bears his name.
