Born on July 18, 1950, in Gulfport, Mississippi, Barkum was selected as a Little All-America player in 1971 for his outstanding performance at Jackson State. He was later drafted ninth overall in the 1972 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, where he played for 12 seasons as both a wide receiver and tight end, recording 326 receptions, 4,789 yards, and 40 touchdowns. He is recognized as a Jackson State University Hall of Fame inductee, honoring his legacy as one of the school’s greatest football players and a significant figure in HBCU athletic history.
