Career at Prairie View A&M University

He joined Prairie View in 1956 to take on the role of head basketball coach for the Panthers. He held that position until 1969.
Under his leadership, the men’s basketball team won several championships including:
- The 1962 NAIA National Small College Basketball Championship.
- Multiple Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles.
Beyond coaching, he served in administrative and academic roles at PVAMU:
- Professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation from 1978–1984.
- Athletic Director and Acting Dean of the College of Education during that period.
- Department Head of Health, Physical Education & Recreation from 1984 until his retirement in 1986.
In recognition of his contributions, the university named its intramural gymnasium the “Leroy G. Moore, Jr. Intramural Gymnasium” in 2008.
He was inducted into the PVAMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1989, noting his achievements as athletic director and head coach of the 1962 championship team.
