Career at Prairie View A&M University
  • He joined Prairie View in 1956 to take on the role of head basketball coach for the Panthers. He held that position until 1969.
  • Under his leadership, the men’s basketball team won several championships including:
    • The 1962 NAIA National Small College Basketball Championship.
    • Multiple Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) titles.  
  • Beyond coaching, he served in administrative and academic roles at PVAMU:
    • Professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation from 1978–1984.
    • Athletic Director and Acting Dean of the College of Education during that period.
    • Department Head of Health, Physical Education & Recreation from 1984 until his retirement in 1986.
  • In recognition of his contributions, the university named its intramural gymnasium the “Leroy G. Moore, Jr. Intramural Gymnasium” in 2008.
  • He was inducted into the PVAMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1989, noting his achievements as athletic director and head coach of the 1962 championship team.
