  • Johnny R. “Jack” Spinks was a standout fullback at Alcorn State University in the SWAC, earning All-SWAC honors three times and rushing for over 1,000 yards in multiple seasons.
  • Following his collegiate success, he became the first African-American from the state of Mississippi to be drafted into the NFL when the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in 1952; he went on to play for several NFL teams including the New York Giants and won an NFL Championship.
  • In recognition of his outstanding athletic career and lasting impact on SWAC and Alcorn State athletics, Spinks was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 1992.
