"Jack" Spinks Class Induction 1992 Sport(s) Football Alcorn State Johnny R. “Jack” Spinks was a standout fullback at Alcorn State University in the SWAC, earning All-SWAC honors three times and rushing for over 1,000 yards in multiple seasons. Following his collegiate success, he became the first African-American from the state of Mississippi to be drafted into the NFL when the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in 1952; he went on to play for several NFL teams including the New York Giants and won an NFL Championship. In recognition of his outstanding athletic career and lasting impact on SWAC and Alcorn State athletics, Spinks was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 1992.
