Coaching career at Southern University
  • Mumford became head football coach at Southern University (in Baton Rouge, Louisiana) in 1936 and coached there for many years (with a small interruption).
  • During his tenure, he built Southern into a dominant program among historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). For example, his 1946 team went 9–2–1, won the conference, shut out four opponents, and outscored opponents 390 to 95.
  • He was very disciplined and emphasized education for his players (not just athletics).
