Early Life & Athletics
  • Ford hailed from La Marque, Texas.
  • He arrived on campus at Texas Southern around 1950.
  • As a student-athlete, he lettered in three sports — football, basketball and baseball — for three consecutive years (1950-1952). He was TSU’s first athlete to accomplish this.
Football Achievements
  • As quarterback of the Tigers, Ford had a transformative impact on the TSU football program.
  • In 1952, he led the team to an undefeated season culminating in the Black college national championship.
  • He became TSU’s first football player to earn All-American honors— and he did it twice (1952 and 1955).
  • Notable passing records: for a single season he threw 21 touchdown passes (in 1951 and repeated in 1952) and his career passing TDs totaled 65.
  • He also holds the school’s single-game mark (tied) of 5 touchdown passes.
Coaching & Later Career
  • After his playing days, Ford served as TSU’s first Head Coach of the Lady Tigers volleyball team, from 1985-1993.
  • Under his leadership the volleyball program won five Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships (1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991).
