Coaching & Administrative Career
  • His coaching career began at Texas College, where he served as head football coach from 1942 to 1948.
  • In 1949, he became the head football coach and athletic director at Texas Southern University.
  • At TSU, his teams compiled a record of 101 wins, 55 losses, and 8 ties over his 16-year tenure (1949–1964).
  • His TSU squads competed in the Mid-Western Athletic Conference (MWAC) early on, and later in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
  • One of his notable seasons: in 1952 TSU went undefeated and claimed the Black College National Championship after defeating Prairie View in the Prairie View Bowl.
  • His TSU team shared the SWAC championship in 1956.
  • Later, he coached at Prairie View A&M University from 1969–1970, with a record of 8-10-1.
Academic Role & Community Involvement
  • Beyond coaching, Durley also served as a mathematics professor at TSU.
  • He was active in community organizations in Houston (e.g., Big Brothers Organization, Houston Business & Professional Men’s Club) and professional associations.
