  • Lemuel Jackson “Lem” Barney (born September 8, 1945, in Gulfport, Mississippi) is one of the most celebrated defensive backs in NFL history and a standout figure from the Jackson State Tigers (1964-66).
  • During his college career, he racked up 26 interceptions over three seasons, punt-averaged over 41 yards, and was a three-time All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) selection.
  • He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1967 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, where he played his entire 11-season career. He intercepted 56 passes, returned multiple kicks and punts for touchdowns, earned 7 Pro Bowl selections, and was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1967.
  • Barney’s excellence earned him induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
  • His legacy also includes recognition as an SWAC “legend,” and he remains a key figure in HBCU football history.
