Early Life & Education
  • George Patrick Evans was born in Selma, Alabama.
  • He earned a Bachelor of Education degree (he had a football scholarship in Kansas), and a Master of Education from the University of West Alabama.
  • Before officiating and politics, he worked as an educator, particularly in special education, and served as the first Black superintendent of the Dallas County School System in Alabama.
Officiating Career & Role in the SWAC
  • Evans began officiating basketball in 1968.
  • In 1979, he began working with the SWAC as an official.
  • He officiated for over 30 years in the SWAC (1979–2009) and served for more than a decade as the coordinator/director of men’s and women’s basketball officials for the conference.
  • Among his officiating achievements: He officiated NCAA Tournament games (including an Elite Eight), and graded officials for the Southeastern Conference (SEC) at University of Alabama home basketball games.
  • He also ran officiating clinics/camps under the SWAC umbrella. For example, in 2005 he announced SWAC Men’s Basketball Officiating Clinics at two locations.

Public Service & Community Impact

  • Beyond officiating, Evans served as a public servant: He was the first African-American President of the Selma City Council, served as Mayor of Selma (from 2008 for two terms).
  • Needs” foundation/event through which he supported agencies serving children with special needs in his community.
