Coaching Career & Wiley College
  • Fred Long began his head-coaching career in 1921 at Paul Quinn College (Dallas, TX), from 1921-22.
  • In 1923 he became head football coach at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He coached there from 1923-1947 and then returned for a second stint from 1956-1965.
  • Over his coaching career at HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities), his overall record was 224 wins – 145 losses – 31 ties.
  • At Wiley, he led the Wildcats to three recognized Black College National Championships: 1928, 1932, and 1945.
  • He also coached Wiley to many conference (SWAC) titles. For example: the 1945 Wiley Wildcats went 10-0, shut out 7 of 10 opponents, outscored opponents 356 to 19, and beat Florida A&M in the Orange Blossom Classic.
