Early Life & playing career
  • Jackson was born on August 13, 1962, in Wetumpka, Alabama.
  • He attended Wetumpka High School, where he led his team to back-to-back Alabama state championships and was twice named MVP of the state tournament.  
  • He then enrolled at Alabama State University, where he became one of the program’s top players: scoring 2,203 career points, ranking 4th all-time at ASU.
  • In his senior year (1984) he was named:
    • Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Year
    • Black College Basketball Player of the Year
    • A Black College All-American.
  • He was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1984 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors (55th overall) and invited to try out for the U.S. Olympic team.
  • He also played professionally overseas (Australia, Canada, Philippines) before retiring around 1990.
  • His ASU jersey number 33 is retired.
Coaching career at Alabama State
  • After finishing his playing career and then working as an assistant, he rejoined ASU’s men’s basketball program as an assistant coach around 2000.
  • In June 2005 he became the head coach of the ASU Hornets men’s basketball team.
  • His tenure as head coach lasted 15 seasons, stepping down on March 27, 2020.
  • His overall head-coaching record:
    • 207-264 overall record.
    • 156-115 in SWAC competition.
  • Achievements while head coach:
    • SWAC regular-season champions: 2008, 2009.
    • SWAC Tournament champions: 2009, 2011.
    • Led ASU to NCAA Tournament appearances.
    • Named SWAC Coach of the Year in 2009.
