  • Davey L. “Dave” Whitney Sr. was a legendary men’s basketball coach at Alcorn State University in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), where he led the Braves to 12 regular-season SWAC championships, six SWAC tournament titles, and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
  • His 1980 team became the first historically Black college to win an NCAA-Division I tournament game.
  • Known by the nickname “The Wiz,” Whitney compiled over 560 career wins and earned nine SWAC Coach of the Year honors. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements and lasting impact on SWAC athletics, Whitney was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame.
