Early Life & Education
  • Fred Newhouse was born on November 8, 1948, in Honey Grove, Texas.
  • He attended Galilee High School in Hallsville, Texas, graduating salutatorian in 1966.
  • He chose to attend Prairie View A&M University, majoring in electrical engineering, graduating in 1970.
  • After his undergraduate degree, he served two years in the U.S. Army.
  • He later earned a master’s degree in international business from the University of Washington in Seattle.
Athletics Career
  • At PVAMU, Newhouse shifted into track & field, notably the 400 m event.
  • He achieved major international success:
    • At the 1971 Pan American Games, he won gold in the 4 × 400 m relay and silver in the 400 m.
    • At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, he won silver in the 400 m and gold in the 4 × 400 m relay.
  • His 400 m time of 44.40 seconds at the Olympics was among the fastest in the world at that time.
  • After his competitive career, he remained involved in track & field in various capacities.
