College Career at Jackson State
  • Curry was recruited by Coach John Merritt to Jackson State and played quarterback for the Tigers.
  • In 1961, the JSU Tigers finished with a 9-2 record (6-1 in conference) and were SWAC champions. Curry earned Third-Team Little All-American honors that year.
  • In 1962, the Tigers (with Curry at QB) defeated the powerhouse Florida A&M University 22-6 in the Orange Blossom Classic. That season JSU was recognized as a black-college national champion.
  • The article notes that Curry had: “2,053 yards of total offense with 15 touchdown passes” during his time leading the offense.
  • He was praised for his arm strength, mobility, leadership and football IQ. For example:
  • “Of all the guys [black quarterbacks in the late 1950s/early 1960s] I saw … Curry was the best.”

Professional Attempt & Coaching
  • Curry was drafted in the 12th round (164th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1963 NFL Draft.
  • He played in six games during the 1963 NFL season and caught one touchdown pass (on a 31-yard reception) for the Steelers.
  • He suffered a hamstring injury which limited his ability to continue as a receiver and effectively ended his NFL playing path.
  • After his playing days, Curry went into coaching, notably at the high school level in Chicago (e.g., head coach at Robeson High School from 1969-2000).
