Early Life & College
  • She was born June 16, 1948, in Rosedale, Mississippi.
  • After high school, she enrolled at Alcorn State University in 1967 as a walk-on for track and field.
  • At the time, there were no women’s track programs in Mississippi, so her enrollment represented a significant step.
Athletic Career & Achievements
  • In the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, she was part of the U.S. women’s 4 × 100 m relay team that won the gold medal and set a new world record of 42.88 seconds.
  • She was ranked No. 3 in the world in the 100 m dash in 1968 with a time of about 11.2 seconds.
  • She is recognized as the first female Olympic medalist from Mississippi
