  • Robert Lorenzo “Dr. Doom” Brazile Jr., born on February 7, 1953, in Mobile, Alabama, is one of the most accomplished athletes to emerge from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
  • He played college football at Jackson State University from 1971 to 1974, where he became a dominant linebacker, leading the SWAC in interceptions in 1974 and earning consensus All-American honors.
  • His outstanding college performance led to his selection as the 6th overall pick in the 1975 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers.
  • Brazile made an immediate impact in the NFL, earning the 1975 Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
  • Over his ten-year career with the Oilers (1975–1984), he played in 147 consecutive games, was selected to seven straight Pro Bowls, earned five First-Team All-Pro honors, and was named to the NFL’s 1970s All-Decade Team.
  • Known for his combination of speed, strength, and intelligence, Brazile helped revolutionize the outside linebacker position in the 3-4 defense, earning him the nickname “Dr. Doom.”
  • After retiring, his achievements were further recognized with his induction into the SWAC Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018, honoring his legacy as one of the greatest defensive players in football history.
