Coaching Career Highlights
  • Moreland began coaching at the high-school level at Greer High School (Car­thage, Mississippi) in the 1962–63 season.
  • He then coached at Utica Junior College from 1963 to 1975.
  • In 1975, Moreland became head coach of the men’s basketball team at Texas Southern University (TSU), a role he held through 2001, and again briefly as interim during 2007–08.
Achievements & Legacy
  • During his tenure at TSU, Moreland amassed 406 wins, making him the winningest coach in the school’s history.  
  • He led TSU to the NAIA National Championship in 1977.
  • Under his leadership, TSU made its first NCAA tournament appearance in 1990, 1994 and 1995.
  • The Tigers won multiple conference regular season and tournament championships under Moreland. For instance:
    • 1993-94 season (led by Moreland) TSU won the SWAC tournament.
    • 1989-90 season (also under Moreland) TSU won their first tournament championship to earn their first NCAA bid.
  • Moreland received the SWAC Coach of the Year honor five times.
  • TSU named their basketball court “Coach Moreland Court” in his honor in 2010.
