He led Southern to the 1985 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament championship. He was later inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2017. Professional & Administrative Career After his playing days, Ponton moved into coaching and university administration. He held roles at Grambling State University including assistant men’s basketball coach and head women’s basketball coach. In December 2018, he was named to lead Athletics (in addition to Student Affairs) at Grambling State. He retired in early 2022 after more than 33 years with Grambling State.
