  • Clifton Gilliard was a standout athlete and influential coach at Prairie View A&M University in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
  • He was a three-year letterman as a halfback on the football team from 1957 to 1959, including being part of the 1958 HBCU national championship team.
  • After his playing career, Gilliard served the university in multiple roles, including head men’s track and field coach, cross country coach, football coach, and interim athletic director, demonstrating leadership across several sports.
  • In recognition of his lifetime of contributions to Prairie View A&M and SWAC athletics, Clifton Gilliard was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2017.
