Background & Early Life

Prophet was born on November 24, 1940, in Leflore County, Mississippi (in or around Itta Bena, Mississippi).
He graduated from Broad Street High School in Greenwood, Mississippi in 1959.
He served in the U.S. Army (rank PFC4) prior to his administrative career.
He attended MVSU where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Science in 1970.
He also earned a Master of Arts in continuing education (or counseling) in 1971.

Career at MVSU and within the SWAC

Prophet joined MVSU in 1971 as sports information director (SID) and had roles such as equipment manager early on.
He served as SID for roughly 30 years (1971–2001).
In 1985 he additionally became the athletics director at MVSU, holding both titles (SID + AD) until his retirement in 2001.
Within the SWAC, he served as the league’s publicity director for nine years (mid-1970s to mid-1980s) and was known as “The Wagon Master” for the SWAC Football Press Tour.
One of his notable contributions was initiating and leading the SWAC Football Press Tour — a road caravan-style promotional event across multiple states, to raise awareness of SWAC football programs.
