Background & Early Life
  • Prophet was born on November 24, 1940, in Leflore County, Mississippi (in or around Itta Bena, Mississippi).
  • He graduated from Broad Street High School in Greenwood, Mississippi in 1959.
  • He served in the U.S. Army (rank PFC4) prior to his administrative career.
  • He attended MVSU where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Science in 1970.
  • He also earned a Master of Arts in continuing education (or counseling) in 1971.
Career at MVSU and within the SWAC
  • Prophet joined MVSU in 1971 as sports information director (SID) and had roles such as equipment manager early on.
  • He served as SID for roughly 30 years (1971–2001).
  • In 1985 he additionally became the athletics director at MVSU, holding both titles (SID + AD) until his retirement in 2001.
  • Within the SWAC, he served as the league’s publicity director for nine years (mid-1970s to mid-1980s) and was known as “The Wagon Master” for the SWAC Football Press Tour.
  • One of his notable contributions was initiating and leading the SWAC Football Press Tour — a road caravan-style promotional event across multiple states, to raise awareness of SWAC football programs.
