  • Russell L. Stockard, Sr. was a pioneering contributor to SWAC athletics, serving as the first Sports Information Director at Southern University from 1953 and later becoming the first public relations director for the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) from 1972 to 1976 and its first compliance officer.
  • He played a central role in elevating the visibility of HBCU sports and helped establish the annual Bayou Classic between Southern University and Grambling State University.
  • In recognition of his ground-breaking service and lasting impact on SWAC athletics, Stockard was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2004.
