He attended Wingfield High School in Jackson. He stood about 6 ft 7 in height and played forward. College Career at Texas Southern Kelly played for the TSU Tigers from 1979–1983. He amassed 3,066 career points. He also grabbed 1,085 rebounds, making him the first Division I player to exceed 3,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career.
