Early Life & College Career
  • Aaron James was born on October 5, 1952, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • He attended Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans.
  • He went to Grambling State University from 1970-1974, playing under legendary coach Fred Hobdy.
  • At GSU, he achieved:
    • SWAC Freshman of the Year (1970-71) and subsequently became a three-time All-SWAC selection.
    • In the 1973-74 season, he averaged 32.1 points per game, leading the nation in scoring.
    • Career at Grambling: scored about 2,251 points.  
  • He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Health & Recreation in 1974 and later earned a Master of Science in Sport Administration (1983) from GSU.
Professional Playing Career
  • Aaron James was drafted by the New Orleans Jazz in the 1974 NBA Draft (2nd round, 28th pick).
  • He played five seasons with the Jazz (1974-79).
    • NBA career averages: ~10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds per game.
  • He was known by the nickname “A.J. From the Parking Lot” for his long-range shooting, even before the NBA three-point line.
  • After the NBA, he played professionally overseas (Italy and the Philippines).
