JACKSON, Miss.- The Jackson State women's tennis team shut out the Alcorn State Lady Braves in a 4-0 decision on Saturday afternoon, to end the season undefeated in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, earning their third straight regular season championship.
Victoria Linkovski and Helen Hernandez began the day with a 6-1 doubles win at number one. The team of Daniela Tovar and Tiara Alvarez fell in a close 7-6 loss to Zoe Crimmel and Oihane V. Lopez, putting the spotlight on a point-clinching match-up at number two. In a back-and-forth match, Isabella Benavides and Paula Corbalan pulled out the win in a 7-6 decision to secure the doubles point.
In her final match at the JSU Tennis Center, Benavides bested Crimmel in an emotional 6-0, 6-0 win. Junior Hernandez gave the Tigers their third point of the day with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at number four. Corbalan clinched the eighth conference win of the year with a 6-1, 6-2 decision to close out the Tigers' perfect regular season.
Jackson State opens the SWAC Tournament in New Orleans, La., with a matchup against No. 8 Mississippi Valley on Friday, April 17, at 9 a.m., with the winner advancing to the semifinals to face either No. 4 Southern or No. 5 Florida A&M.
